With the release of the latest iPad a few months ago, the Apple Pencil is no longer restricted to Apple’s “Pro” iPads. As a result, we’ve seen an increase in enquiries about WriteUpp’s “compatibility” with the Apple Pencil.
To us, “compatibility” means “it works out of the box” and if you share this definition then WriteUpp is NOT compatible.
However, if your definition is somewhat broader (and it does seem to be amongst some providers!) then WriteUpp will work with Apple Pencil.
All you need to do is download a 3rd party keyboard that supports Apple Pencil from the App Store. Then when you’re using WriteUpp in Safari, you will be able to switch to this keyboard and instead of typing you can use your Apple Pencil to write your notes which will automatically be transcribed into text.
However, there is a very big BUT….
If you install one of these apps and allow them "full access" keep in mind that the developer/provider of the app will be able to see everything you enter via that keyboard.
We take privacy and security very seriously at WriteUpp so if you do choose to grant “full access”, aside from the obvious data security concerns, you should also consider the following questions in relation to GDPR:
- Do you know where that data is stored?
- Do you have a Data Processing Agreement (DPA) in place with the developer
We’re not saying that you shouldn’t use the Apple Pencil with WriteUpp but we do want you to fully understand what “compatibility” means and what the implications of using a 3rd party keyboard are.
